Where does the endless rain cloud in my mind really wander to?

QUICKWRITE: The Drought (part 1)

The wait is pointless. Like waiting for the water to pour in an endless drought...

My name is Latisse. The things in my life include a lot of people. But it doesn't exactly mean excitement. I live with 8 siblings me included makes it a hassle of 9. Our life was always quite quaint. Most people expect utter chaos when I tell people about having 8 siblings. But the thing that keeps them in check is one thing that also keeps everyone quiet in my life. The Drought...

People in the normal world expect droughts to be something quite worrying. But in my world, worrying is not a well enough word to describe this drought. In my world, the small oasis town of Palanil... Our drought is something of a curse. Suffering a drought of 10 years and counting. So what used to be an oasis is actually no more. The water is gone, the town lives off the limited water supply that has been scarcely used. Many civilians have gone mad from the heat and the fact that no civilian talks in the town of Palanil. This quiet endless drought drives the civilians mad one by one. My parents also being one of them. More than enough people within the 10 years of the drought have passed away. But what can I say. We can't even shed tears for we'll be using water that should be for ourselves...

But throughout this normal dry famine I have grown accustomed to. This day is my 23rd birthday. Which triggered something that would change the drought forever.

The day of my birthday, I was given the special gift of water of course. A whole cup of water to celebrate the occasion. I give a sip to each of my siblings as they all look at me with earnest eyes. Our family's ways of showing our affection was to at least remember each others birthday. Using the sip of water. They sing happy birthday to me in the quiet town. There are only 15 people in this town. Other than the 9 people in my family. Palanil has 6 others who survived the drought so far. 5 are the elders. They watch over the water and keep constant track of the water supply. Although they actually weren't that "elderly "  we call them that to show them our opinion thinking they are the wisest of the town. The other is a man a year older than me with the name of Quinn. His name is very strange to me. But as the drought shows many disadvantages, I never asked him where his family was. But today  he's gone. Nowhere to be seen. But I was soon to realize he was going to show up in a way I never imagined before
